Bishopthorpe Infant School is part of Yorkshire Learning Trust (YLT), which is the admission authority for this school.

The admissions arrangements for the 2027-28 academic year have been formally determined by the Trust Board. These arrangements set out how many children will be admitted to the school and the criteria used to allocate places if there are more applications than places available.

Published Admissions Number (PAN)
The Published Admission Number (PAN) is the number of pupils it is intended to admit into the first year group of school (Reception). The PAN is the maximum number of pupils that the admission authority will admit to each year group.

Applying for a school place
All children can start school in the September before their 5th birthday. You should apply for your child to start primary or infant school by the 15th of January in the school year your child turns 4. For entry in the September 2027 school year, children will have been born between 1st September 2022 and 31st August 2023. Later start dates are possible and can be discussed with the headteacher.
Applications for children who were born between 1st September 2023 and 31st August 2024 can be made only from the Autumn of 2027.

If you are moving into or across the York area, or you are simply requesting a change of school, this type of school admission is called an in-year transfer. The City of York Admissions team also coordinate requests for in-year admissions and you can read more about the process on the CYC website.

Will your child start reception in September 2027?
Applications for a place in Reception starting in September 2027 opened on 12th September 2026 and the deadline for ‘on time’ applications is the 15th January 2027. Late applications can still be made after this date. National Offer Day is the 16th April 2027, or the next working day.
Applications for entry into reception can be made by using the online form to apply for a school place.
If you can’t apply online you can request a paper Primary Application Form by calling 01904 551 554. Forms are also distributed to primary schools and nurseries in the York area.

Admissions Consultation 2028/29
Consultation on Yorkshire Learning Trust’s Proposed Admission Arrangements for September 2028 Entry
YLT is consulting on its proposed admission arrangements for entry to its schools in September 2028.
As the admission authority for its schools, the Trust is required to consult on any proposed changes to admission arrangements in accordance with the School Admissions Code 2021. Admission authorities must consult for a minimum of six weeks between 1 October and 31 January where changes are proposed or where required under the Code.
The consultation period will run from 12 October 2026 to 24 November 2026.
Proposed change to admission arrangements for Archbishop of York Church of England Junior School
Admission authorities have a statutory duty to consult on admission arrangements every 7 years or when making changes to their admission arrangements.
As the admission authority for Archbishop of York Church of England Junior School (AYJS), Yorkshire Learning Trust (YLT) is consulting on the admission arrangements because we are proposing a change to the school's Published Admission Number (PAN) from 45 pupils to 30 pupils for 2028/29. Accordingly, the Trust is undertaking a formal consultation before determining the admission arrangements.
There are no changes proposed to admission arrangements for any other schools in the Trust.
The PAN is the number of pupils that will be admitted into the school's intake year. The proposed reduction for AYJS reflects local circumstances, including bringing the PAN in line with that of the local infant school and taking into account pupil numbers in the area, and is intended to support the effective planning and delivery of education provision.
We welcome comments from parents, carers, schools, local authorities and other interested parties on this proposal.
The consultation opens on 12 October 2026 and closes on 24 November 2026. During this period, the views of parents/carers, schools, staff, neighbouring authorities and other interested parties are being sought.
Following this period of consultation, the admission arrangements will be considered by the YLT Trust Board alongside any comments made. The admission arrangements will be determined by 28 February 2027. Determined policies will be on the YLT website by 15 March 2027.
